About

I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. I was always passionate about STEM, and I ended up going to Medical School at the age of fifteen and a half years old and was a world-class competitive swimmer at the same time. I came to the States in 2013 when I was a final-year medical student to do part of my clinical rotations at the University of Alabama in Birmingham then Johns Hopkins University Hospital. During my time at Johns Hopkins University, I was exposed to state-of-the-art Neurosurgical research technology. That’s where I fell in love with research and decided to pursue my postdoctoral fellowship studying brain tumors, specifically pituitary lesions, and the transition from microscopic to fully endoscopic. Afterward, I pivoted my interest toward awake brain surgery for the resection of tumors and their impact on patient outcomes from a surgical and economic perspective. In 2016: I joined the Mayo Clinic Florida Neurosurgery Research team, and I transformed my interest to focus on the electrophysiological aspect of awake brain surgery. My team and I were able to drive a new electrocorticographic monitoring device (the Circular Grid) from the designing, patenting, and production phases to utilization in the operating room, where it showed superior performance compared to its competitors. In addition, our results showed a higher tumor resection rate and a shorter transient recovery period during the hospitalization period in the patients who had the circular grid utilized in their surgeries.   In 2019, I turned my passion towards passive brain mapping and Brain-Machine Interfaces. I focused on understanding the primary physiological function of the Supplementary Motor Area (SMA) of the human brain, including its behavior and cognition controls using electrophysiological mechanisms. I successfully designed and conducted cognitive and behavioral experiments using BCI2000 Software and Natus clinical equipment. My passion and drive to ask questions and look for scientific answers have led me into an excellent academic track record of 41 high-impact peer-reviewed publications, national & international presentations, five US patents, and collaborations with a broad basis of active and passive Brain Mapping area during awake brain surgery. In addition, I can communicate scientific methodology and results in a comprehensible language for maximum effectiveness.
